DevSci and the Center for Epidemiology & Population Health recently hosted:
Transdiagnostic Clinical Risk Calculators as a Critical Tool for Advancing Equitable Precision Medicine: Bridging Mental & Physical Health to Accelerate Translationon
February 27th, 2023
As part of Setting the Stage, Laurie Wakschlag, PhD began the workshop with a warm welcome and presented on The power of a transdiagnostic, lifespan approach for advancing the impact of health risk calculators. The Director of the National Institute for Mental Health (NIMH), Joshua Gordon, MD, PhD presented next on Computational methods as a new mental health research frontier. The Chief of the Division of Cardiovascular Sciences, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, National Institutes of Health (NHLBI), David C. Goff Jr., MD, PhD, followed presenting on Risk prediction strategies for improving cardiovascular health.
Leading Session 1 of the Workshop was a methods talk by Michael Pencina, PhD, the Vice Dean of Data Science at Duke University. He shared an insightful presentation on Risk Calculators as an essential tool in precision medicine.Meredith Duncan, PhD followed with a flash talk on Considerations of social determinants of health in risk prediction.Vijay Mittal, PhD spoke next on Contributions of mechanistic components to risk prediction for psychosis. Joan Luby, MD gave the final flash talk before the panel discussion on Developmental considerations for risk calculator applications to early mental health.
Session 2 of the Workshop focused on Risk Calculator Implementation. Paolo Fusar-Poli, PhD started this session with a methods talk on Implementation of risk calculators in real world clinical settings. Nivedita Mohanty, MD followed with a flash talk on Implementation of risk calculators to advance health equity. Rinad Beidas, PhD, gave the next flash talk on Insights from implementation science on implementing risk calculators. Tim Hahn, PhD, gave the next flash talk on Trade-offs in the use of machine learning for risk prediction before the group broke out in the second panel discussion.
Session 3 commenced with a focus on Future Directions in Risk Predictions. Norrina Allen, PhD, gave a methods talk Next steps in risk prediction for precision medicine. Sadiya Khan, MD, followed with a flash talk on Promise and pitfalls of incorporating polygenic risk scores. Matt Goldrick, PhD, followed with a flash talk on Automatic analysis of vocal features for clinical risk calculation in mental health. Seema Shah, JD, shared the final flash talk on Bioethical consideration in the use of risk calculators. Session 3 ended with a panel discussion with the presenters.
Donald Lloyd-Jones, MD, closed the Workshop with an excellent presentation Leveraging the promise of health risk calculator for optimizing lifespan health while highlighting points from other speakers.
